Forex Margin, Required Trading Margin, Equity, Used Margin and Free Margin
What's Required Margin? : Required Forex Margin is amount of money your online trading broker requires from you to open a trade transaction position. It is expressed in percent.
What's Forex Equity? : FX Equity is the total amount of capital you've in your trading account.
What's Used Margin? : Used Margin is amount of money in your account that has already been used when buying a contract, this contract is one that's displayed in open trade positions. You can't use this sum of money after opening a transaction because you've already used it & it isn't available to you to open another trade with.
In other words, because your online broker has opened up a position for you using trading capital you have borrowed, you must keep this used margin as a security to allow you to continue using leverage the broker has given you.
What's Forex Free Margin? : FX Free Margin is the amount of money in your trading account that you can use to open new trade positions. Free Margin is the amount of money in your trading account which hasn't yet been leveraged because you haven't yet opened a trade transactions with this money - this Free Margin is also very important for you because it enables you as a trader to continue holding your open trade transactions as explained below.
Example of What's Margin in MT5 Platform Software
The margin examples on MetaTrader 5 below, the set leverage ratio is 100:1, the margin which is 1 % is $2683.07 - therefore the total amount controlled by trader is: $268,307 - this is because with leverage the trader has used little of their own funds & borrowed the rest from broker, with this trading leverage set at 100:1, a trader is using 1 % of their trading capital, this 1 % is $2683.07 - if 1 percent is $2683.07 then 100 % is $268,307
